In October 1976, 14-year old Larry Mullen, stuck a notice on the board at school looking for musicians to join a band. The boys that joined the young drummer would still be together nearly 30 years later, as the rock group U2. Adam Clayton became the bassist, Dave Evans, aka The Edge, played lead guitar and Paul Hewson, aka Bono, became their vocalist and frontman.
By March 1978 they had adopted the four-man lineup and spent the next two years building a local following in Dublin and releasing singles on a small label. In March 1980, they signed to Island records and released four albums in just four years: with
'Boy', 'October', 'War' and 'The Unforgettable Fire', the band grew more popular with each release. With the powerful sound of the band coupled with their spiritual, dense and political lyrics, U2 built up a critical and popular following as one of the rising rock bands of the eighties.
Over the course of the next albums, U2's music became more experimental and their stage show became ever more elaborate. From the stark simplicity of 'the Joshua Tree' to the elaborate production and layed conception of 'Zooropa', the band have proved themselves unafraid of change, growth and even making themselves look ridiculous.
U2 continues their work for charity and social action. They promoted the Northern Ireland Peace Accords, raised money for the survivors of the Omagh bombing, played in devastated Sarajevo following the war there, | |

helped bolster the shaky economy of New York City by playing there following the September 11 terrorist attacks, participated in the Live 8 series of concerts to relieve Third World debt, and continue to promote the Make Poverty History campaign. Bono has become prominent in efforts to end poverty and seek relief from AIDS and promote trade for Africa.
U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. By that year they had won 22 Grammy awards, a historic record surpassed only by Stevie Wonder.
