The life of flamenco singer Enrique Morente, born in Granada, Spain, has always been linked to flamenco.
Since an early age he showed his determination to learn from the great masters.
At age 18 he moved to Madrid and began to share the stage with the leading flamenco figures of the time and surprised critics and specialists alike.
His personality, his respect for tradition and his appreciation of flamenco singing earned him the title “young flamenco maestro.”
His debut album, “Cante flamenco,” came out in 1967 and stood out for its personal style and an unusual repertoire for the time. Felix de Utrera accompanied Morente on guitar.
From then on, Morente’s albums will continue to show his interest and his creative vein alongside guitar players like Niño Ricardo, Perico del Lunar, Parrilla de Jerez, Manzanita, Paco Cortés, Tomatito, Manolo e lsidoro Sanlúcar, Enrique de Melchor, El Bola, Paquete, Montoyita, Sabicas Luis and specially Pepe Habichuela.
Within the “new flamenco” movement, Enrique Morente is one of the few who took the risk of playing the roles of producer, director and actor as well as flamenco singer in his own shows. |

Halfway through the sixties Morente participated in the staging of “La Celestina” with pianist Antonio Robledo. Later he created the ballet called “Obsesión" premiered by the National Ballet of Canada. In 1988 he introduced the bold “El loco romantico” at the Granada Festical, based on the novel Don Quixote; and in 1990, he introduced "Allegro Soleo” at the Seville Flamenco Biennial. His masterpiece “Omega,” with which he toured Spain and France, includes his personal version of Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Poeta en New York” and songs written by Leonard Cohen, as well as the meeting of flamenco and electronic music by the band Lagartija Nick. Enrique Morente has toured the world with this art: Madrid’s Royal Theater, Mexico’s Fine Arts Palace, Paris’ Olympia Theater, New York’s Lincoln Center, Mérida’s Roman Theater, Palau de la musica Catalana, as well as tours around France, Holland, Germany, Japan, the U.S., Latin America and Russia.
In 1994 he was given the National Music Award, bestowed to a flamenco artist for the first time, and the Honorary Music Award in 1998. In 2003 Morente released the album “El pequeño reloj,” a new sample of the artist’s maturity. Niño Josele, Pepe Habichuela and Tomatito collaborated on this album, in which Morente adapted verses by Quevedo, Bécquer and León Felipe. Flamenco music is blended with ancestral music styles like Jewish, Andalusian or classical music and other more modern styles, like pop, jazz or techno.
In 2005 he released Enrique Morente, "Sueña la Alhambra", a collection of ten songs that range from traditional flamenco to ultra modern flamenco performed by a cantaor interested in both popular tradition and Spanish literature |
